Cuckoo for Cocktails
The newest addition to the Wellington waterfront bar scene (which is swiftly and stylishly putting Auckland’s bigger and tackier Viaduct to shame) is the Cuckoo Cocktail Emporium, which can be found behind Foxglove, next to the entrance of One Red Dog.
Bought to you by the people behind Hooch and Hawthorne Lounge, Cuckoo sets itself apart not only through its unusual drink selection, by also through its decor; everything is second hand and everything has a price tag on it.
I was there on a Saturday night, which I hear is the quietest night of the week, and though the place was somewhat empty, it meant the service was prompt and friendly, and we were able to check out all the beautiful furniture without interrupting anyone.
I was particularly taken by a pair of hanging lamps that I hope are still there in a few weeks time. I also hope that the concept of selling everything out from underneath people works, as it will mean the atmosphere of the place will constantly change with the furniture. The place is warm and cozy and the current selection of couches and chair are comfy and perfect for intimate conversation.
Aside from the carefully selected range of lamps, chairs and sofas, Cuckoo also offers a small but clearly carefully selected range of cocktails. I forgot to ask if the menu changes daily, as I noticed that it was dated and printed that day. I had a somewhat medicinal Porter Master, which was served warm (apparently having been finished with a hot poker which I didn’t see myself) and included Tuatara Porter beer, coffee liqueur and a hint of something citrusy. It was strange but compelling; I saw at least two other people order it that night, maybe for the warmth on a cold winters night, maybe for the novelty factor. In the end it reminded me of a Guinness, dark and frothy and warm.
I’m definitely keen to head back and check it out during the week to see what the vibe and clientele are like on a post-work drinks night. I just hope that no-one buys my 70s lampshades before I get there.

Agree! I went to a party there on a Saturday night and it was fantastic; intimate yet unpretentious. The retro furniture created a living room feel and the pool table is a great addition. The fact that all the furniture is for sale nearly had me walking out with a royal blue rocking chair - but I couldn't figure out how to get it on the bus home. Will be back.

Love the interior and the cocktails, however was shocked by the price of the bruschetta at 15$. It would be nice to have something to eat at around 10$ to attract a responsible drinking culture.

So a good place for a private function then?

I Love Cuckoo, an intimate little place just like a comfortable homely lounge. Sit back and relax in plush velour chairs with warm friendly service, smooth tunes and watch the world go by.
Perfect for catching up with a friends after work. Wine list-not too expensive. The cheese and quince jelly is scrummy.
Have my eye on a piece to add to my collection, yes everything is for sale.
