It’s no chore to visit this Laundry
Local boys – Matt, Chung and Craig have just opened up a very, very cool new lounge bar and music café.
Laundry sits on the corner of Cuba Street and Abel Smith Street and literally used to be a Laundromat. Going by the outdoor laundry signage, I was kind of expecting there to be some remnants of the former tenants, dryers filled with fluff, old washing machines that don’t spin like they used to, maybe even that elusive sock fairy lurking in the corner.
But, instead, I see the beginnings of a whole new era taking place.
It was still in its construction stage when I visited (good call wearing my pastel pink boat shoes) but it was clear it was going to be a quirky new addition to Cuba St. Matt proudly pointed out different features – almost everything is second hand, from the wallpaper found on Trademe to the hand dryers sourced from Wellington Girls’ College. The doors to the bathrooms are from various old Wellington homes and other bits and pieces were literally found on the side of the road.
Some of the important things are new though, like the fireplace (woop!!) and the coffee machine.
Laundry is set to be my favourite new hangout. A perfect distance between uni and work for me, I’ll be stopping by for a cup of Peoples Coffee and a toasted sandwich. If I’ve finished classes for the day, I might even treat myself to some of their craft beer – on tap you’ll find local brews like Panhead (from Upper Hutt) and Tuatara (my favourite!).
Not to worry if your date is a tad boring too, live music of all sorts will be happening on the reg and the boys are even supporting local buskers by sorting them a good spot out the front and supplying them with power! (Check their Facebook page for details).
Laundry is now open and eagerly awaiting your visit. If you head in, I’ll be the one sitting in front of the fireplace, flat white in hand and sporting my pink boat shoes now that the dust has cleared.
Laundry – open from 11am til late at night on Thursday through to Sunday.
