The Oval Ball Bar

Laddie... where are you drinkin?.
Laddie... where are you drinkin?

There’s no denying what’s happening right now. Rugby head or no, you cannae bury your head in a corner of our wee antipodean isle and forget there’s a World Cup in the offing.

With everything from the Argentinian tidal wave that swept down the waterfront after they beat Scotland by one point to the distinctive South African lilt that has taken over Cuba St’s outdoor drinking tables to the Welsh guy in a kilt I met with a ventriloquist dragon at his side, there’s a fabulous blend of rugby mad folk in town.

Not all, and certainly not me, can afford the price of a ticket to our illustrious circus arena. So we find ourselves perched on friends’ sofas, striding through the FanZone or nestled in the elbow room only at one of Wellington’s venues to watch the game.

I want to know who has upped the ante and is doing RWCTV well? You can catch the game on big screens at various outdoor points throughout the town, but if you want a pint (bless) to lean on during an intense 80 minutes of rugby football, where’s the top venue to go?

My knowledge is limited to the two I’ve watched a game at, being the Bristol on Cuba – great if you get in early and nab a seat – or the Cambridge – plenty of TVs, bountiful chilled tap beer but soggy chips.

Without a corrugated iron drinking barn like the Aucklanders have on their newly discovered waterfront, I want to hear the best venues to park up, wave a flag and chant Pokarekare Ana for the ABs (or another fitting anthem). I know Betty’s have been loading their surround screen scene with rugby, and Avida have a roll down screen to break the nouveau ambience for some slavish sporting celebration. No doubt the Thistle Inn is backing the tanker up every game day, and everywhere from The Tasting Room to the Mighty they are swinging from the rafters singing Swing Low.

Where is your pick for a comfy perch, a frosty pint, and a bunch of hollering rugby loons every time the whistle blows for the RWC? Score out of ten for rugbyhead ambience??? Extra point for pies?

Nick.
