Thunderbird is Go
The latest opening is Thunderbird Cafe on Featherston St, in the old Espresso Republic space.
Gone are the tit for tat snippery snipes of the departed previous owner vs Sir Bob Jones, opinionated tycoon and enthusiastic litigator. In their place are the straight forward diner tables and winged signage of the new crew on Featherston.
Mexi-flavours abound on the menu which is still hot off the press. Thunderbird, opened by previous manager of Gotham and owners of Sweet Mother’s Kitchen, opened its doors yesterday and filled for lunch in 10 minutes. Perhaps a bit of hangry in the Lambton execs and the overworked diplomats upstairs longing for something fresh in their hood.
The menu is breakfast, lunch, and it’s good hearty Mexi-Merican nosh. Burgers, burritos, quesadillas and the welcome arrival of home fries. The teething is still going on, with computer systems giving them grief and half the decor still enroute, but with the pedigree behind it Thunderbird promises much.
Give it a whirl. Post your thoughts below.
FAB.

Went for lunch today - it was good. Very much like Sweet Mother's Kitchen. I got the Quesadilla and a friend of mine the burrito - both were fine but a little on the bland side - not enough spice. And the Quesadilla didn't come with anything - not even sour cream. Would be great if they could have the spicy sauce bottles on the table like they do at SMK too. It has just opened so no doubt they are still finding their feet! Will definitely go back - especially to try the Pecan Pie - it looked amazing. The burgers looked good too.

Thunderbirds is my new favorite local for breakfast and coffee. Egg white omelette, just the best. Great protein no fat, good to see on the menu and so tasty. Counter food looks amazing esp the homemade cakes &baking. Well done on decor although not completely finished, great atmosphere. You can tell the owners are experienced operators.

Wonderful breath of fresh air in the CBD, starving for this style of 'down-home / good people/decent food and drink' around the corner from me. New favourite place by a long shot and I hope one that will stay a long - long time. Awesome decor, and of course the people make it, and the people make GOOD coffee. Go Thunderbird Cafe!

Always a fan of Nicci and the crew. This end of town sorely lacks a really good cafe - until now.
One of the things that makes it such a great place is the atmosphere. You can tell the people love what they are doing. And it shows in the food and the service.
I've followed the owners through a few different cafes now. Every one of them has been a success. Every time I am disappointed that my favourite people have moved on, I am really pleasantly surprised to find them again.

A couple of coffees and lunch today as well. Great service, fun crew. Food is yummy, with a splash of hot sauce. I had the chicken burrito and my friend had a thunderburger. I do wish for funkier tables though, and maybe some variety - couch corner or bar seats maybe.

I went into Thunderbirds Cafe on Monday for lunch with my daughter who was visiting from Dunedin. Allpress have a roastery in Dunedin and she said the coffee is amazing. Well it is great coffee and the food and service were wonderful as well. Will be back - Jan

Great food, great service, great value! When we got there all the tables were full and a few others arrived after us, but the staff were really great at getting tables turned around quickly. I had the fish burger with cornmeal batter, and it was delicious - really nice crispy batter, and moist fish. Had to have it with the curly fries of course! Great value too, burger was about $10.

Myself and work colleagues popped in the day it opened, just last week, and were impressed with the gluten free brownies - even the non diet restricted people were impressed. Not sure about the decor yet, but we'll definitely give lunch a try.

We came for breakfast yesterday- I ordered the mushrooms on toast $13. These were like chewing rubber- they were all curled up and rock hard..don't know how they got mushrooms to be inedible! Partner had scrambed eggs with sausage/onion/cheese- these too were just rubber. Maybe the microwave killed the breakfast- grim

Yum delicious vegetarian burger. Small though!

Started off with a few coffees throughout the week, then had my first lunch the other. Tasty enough but too small for the prices I think. I had the veg quesadilas which were yummy but needed something else - the burgers are small too. Curly fries rock though!
