Be there with bells on
- James Nokise, who will perform with Ben Hurley at the Hunter Lounge on 6 December
The end of another year is nearly upon us, and Peter Jackson will soon be coming down the chimneys of all good boys and girls to deliver presents or another movie or something.
For many, this can be a bit of a high stress time, so why not blow off a little steam by heading along to a comedy show or two?
Apart from the upcoming 7 Days Live tour, there’s a number of other comedy shows worth considering over the next few weeks. This week, there’s a new season of homegrown political comedy Public Service Announcements at BATS – in which Christmas comes to the Beehive. Then there’s the imaginatively titled Christmas Comedy Showcase at Fringe Bar, featuring a solid lineup of local comics including Adam Wright, Ricky Threlfo, Rob Harris, MC Sam Smith and award winning rapper Brad Zimmerman. Should be an excellent way to spend a Sunday night.
Next week, your comedy cup runneth over – with Dai Henwood, Steve Wrigley, Justine Smith and Urzila Carlson doing two nights at the San Francisco Bathhouse, and Ben Hurley and James Nokise (incidentally also the writer of Public Service Announcements) playing a one-off show at Victoria University’s Hunter Lounge. If your tastes run more to improvised comedy, then there’s also WIT’s ‘A Christmas Cracker’ – a two week season of improv covering panto, puppets and the end of the world.
On top of that, all of the usual suspects will still be up and running, including Raw Meat Mondays at Fringe Bar, The Medicine on Wednesdays at Meow, and new regular gig Comedy Monthly at The Office in Newtown. In the new year, there’ll also be a regular weekly show at the Cavern Club, and it looks like there’ll be regular comedy nights at Daddy O’s – meaning that for the first time in quite some time we’re really going to spoiled for comedy choice in Wellington. Long may it continue…
