Buff1 @ The Boombap Sessions @ SFBH!!!.

Known to his immediate family as Jamall Bufford, Ann Arbor, Michigan (USA) resident Buff1 is an impeccable lyrical hip-hop MC. Hailing from the same city responsible for producing the Brainfeeder collective affiliated synth-hop monster named Samiyam (who will be touring here in September), Buff1, much like Samiyam shares the common traits of successfully with running a modern take on hip-hop, while still paying endless respect to the foundation qualities of the genre. Of course Buff1 is an MC and Samiyam is a producer/dj, so this might not make the most sense straight away, but listening here, and here, should get you straight.

Anyway, Buff1 came up with a local crew called the Athletic Microphone League. Since entering the game, he has rocked right now, in both clubs and arenas across the globe, alongside the likes of Eminem, Mos Def, De La Soul, Slum Village, Jurassic 5, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, Little Brother and Ghostface Killah. Back in 2007 he released an album called Pure. Pure was a very good record. Described by Okayplayer as both “incredible” and “classic”, Pure saw Buff1 trading immaculate lyrical bars with the esteemed likes of Guilty Simpson, over beats from PPP member Wajeed and his contemporaries.

Since then, Buff1 has worked with a whole bunch of really cool record producers, rappers and singers, released some great music and done a whole bunch of big things. This Saturday, he is performing in Wellington at The Boombap Sessions (held at The San Francisco Bath House) with support from local favourites DJ Marek and DJ Bucks A Pop. Coincidentally, Auckland hip-hop DJ Che Kamikaze will be passing through as well to operate the ones and twos for the duration of Buff1’s performance. The connection here came about through a feature appearance Buff1 made on a remix of Auckland rapper David Dallas’ underground banger ‘Front To Back’, an artist who Che Kamikaze manages. Anyway, I digress, this party will be fun as hell; and hopefully many more connections will be made.
