Dusty grooved soul

Dusty grooved soul.

The kings of dusty record crate digging, when it comes to criminally obscure disco, soul, funk and boogie, BBE/Rapster Records affiliated DJ duo Kon and Amir are the best in the game. Co-signed for by the legendary likes of Lord Finesse (“Kon and Amir are two of the most extraordinary but underrated beat diggers in the game,”) and A-Trak (“Kon and Amir are legends in the beat digging game, their compilations and mixtapes are classics and represent a style of DJing that’s true to the essence of Hip-Hop,”) this Boston, USA bred duo have spent their lifetimes sifting through record bins, in the process unearthing countless forgotten classics.

Fittingly enough, this Thursday, Kon will be performing an exclusive DJ set at Cuba Street’s infamous bar and restaurant of bars and restaurants – The Matterhorn. Presented as part of the Havana Club Nights of Swiss Mixto series of events, Kon is in the country to promote the release of the third volume in his and Amir’s critically lauded Off Track compilation series (this time focusing on an expose of previously unknown disco, boogie and funk from Brooklyn, New York City) – the follow on to their groundbreaking five volume On Track compilation series.

Sparing (yet subtly effective) with his DJ mixing, Kon presents songs in a manner which while definitely keeping the party bumping, allows you to appreciate the full experience of the tune. And with new exclusive edits of tunes such as Donny McCullough’s ‘From the Heart’, I feel like I can safely futurecast an evening of sophisticatedly adult black music grooves bundled up with an appropriate degree of party-generating chaos in the mix. In short, this will definitely not be an evening of watered down café soul.

Having a DJ of Kon’s experience and knowledge in the capital is a rare privilege indeed. If you are in any way, shape or form inclined towards classic African American music, please make it past The Matterhorn this Thursday!

Martyn.
