Smooth Musical Maneuvers

Smooth Musical Maneuvers.

You can’t judge how good a musician, DJ or producer is by how well known, or unknown they are. To assume someone isn’t talented because you haven’t heard of them is a foolish stance to take, because everybody starts out as an unknown. In light of this stone cold fact, this week, I would like to take some time to talk to you about a new bi-monthly music event called Smooth Maneuvers.

Kicking off on Friday the 3rd of September at Sandwiches Nightclub, Smooth Maneuvers is essentially an exploration of the concept of developing an interplay between DJ’s, live electronic music artists, bands and musicians. And while given the line-up there is definitely a focus on bass-centralized intelligent dance music, at the same time, as opposed to placing an emphasis on specific dance genres (i.e. drum and bass, dubstep, electro, grime and so forth), Smooth Maneuvers places a premium on cross discipline creative spontaneity.

For the launch, Smooth Maneuvers have gathered up a collection of acts from across the country. They have live drum and bass act Black Planet, Wellington jazz musician turned synthesizer and sampler beatsmith Ed Zuccollo (of local funk act Harbour City Electric), Hamilton Junglist HSD (best known for a stellar jungle remix of ‘Rude Girl’ by Katchafire) and Dunedin sound explorers Oleh and Fil Basik. With the remainder of the line-up rounded up by a flotilla of local and international DJs as well as a saxophone player and a guitarist, at $10 on the door, this event is a chance to check a bevy of emerging quality acts for a very nice price!

Even better, while the actually gig begins at 10pm, their will be 2-for-1 pizzas available in the lounge bar (accompanied by live music) from 8pm!  Sounds like a good deal, wouldn’t you agree?

Martyn.
