Some shows you should go to in Wellington this week.

Music music music. Most of us like music, some of us like to listen to it at home, some of us like to listen to it live at shows; and some of us enjoy both. Anyway, for those of you who enjoy attending live events – we live in a city full of great venues, and more importantly, great acts. In line with this, Wellington is these days, a genuine touring destination for world class overseas acts.

This week, I thought I would give you a quick rundown on a few decent shows going down in the capital. It’s a mixed bag of styles, and that is even better. What is the phrase they use? Something for everyone? Yes, that is the one.

Left or Right – Thursday 23 Sept at Happy Bar

Hailing from Dunedin, Left or Right perform a modern take on spaced out retro psyche rock, big dynamics, big experimentation and beyond. With support from The Slur Tones, expect an evening of melody drenched in fuzzy warmth, nice.

Tommy Ill – Friday 24 Sept at Mighty Mighty

The big man of local hipster-hop, Tommy Ill takes the traditional template of rap music and makes it accessible to fans of rock, indie, noise and their associated ilk. His stage show has more energy than most overseas hip-hop artists, he samples better records to make his beats and always brings awesome support guests with him as well. While you’re at it, check out his debut album; seriously cool.

Mitsu The Beats & Taro Wassupski – Sat 25 Sept at Sandwiches Nightclub

Representing Japan’s Jazzy Sport collective, Mitsu and Taro are leading lights of the Japanese modern beats scene. Taking hip-hop, soul, funk, broken beat and more and blending it up, they create a uniquely Asian take on contemporary urban music – plus, they’re a couple of super stylish dudes – you know you wanna check this one out!

So yeah, these are three of the many shows I will be at this week (and weekend). You should come along and bring some friends with you! Music really sounds better when more people are listening! Truly!

Martyn.
