WEEKLY WELLINGTON MUSIC NEWS 10/12/2012 – 16/12/2012
During 2011 and the first couple of months of this year I wrote a weekly Wellington music news column for a national street press rag named Volume. Volume has been defunct for several months now. However, I really enjoyed putting that news column together, so this week, like I did a couple of weeks ago I thought that I might pen one for you all to read. After all, it’s an easy way to kill a lot of birds with a lot of stones, and no actual killing involved at all.
Famed American Punk Rock band Lagwagon, the first band ever signed to Fat Wreck Chords play at the San Francisco Bath House on Wednesday night. 8pm start. Presale tickets are $40 at Under The Radar, more on the door.
On Thursday night Canadian IDM revivalist/electronic indie pop singer Grimes also plays at San Francisco Bath House. This show is sold out, but who knows, someone might be selling their tickets outside on the night.
Also on Thursday night, Pickle Eating House and Bar (same building as Sandwiches) are hosting a special international edition of their Pickle Sessions night with DJ Nick Warren (UK). Keeping with the Pickle Sessions “play what you listen to at home” format, Nick Warren will be sharing a selection of after-party anthems in the style of his lauded Back To Mine DJ mix (1999). Tickets are available online HERE for $10 + bf each. The music kicks off at 9pm.
Come Friday night, rising Hamilton based rap star Raiza Biza plays at Medusa Bar on Vivian Street, for the Wellington leg of his Dream Something album launch tour. Entry is $5 before 10pm, $10 afterwards. With a great support line-up, this looks like an excellent show.
Amazing Auckland heavy metal band Evil Ocean play at Mighty Mighty on Friday night. Appearances from Evil Ocean are extremely rare. Just as rare are appearances from the band they’re playing with, Wendyhouse. If you’re into your cult sounds, this could be the show for you. 10.30 kickoff. $5 on the door.
On Saturday, Wellington reggae promotions company Nice Up are hosting their annual Xmas Party at Cafe Baobab in Newtown. Seven DJs, one live band, and free entry. Music kicks off from 7pm, and Cafe Baobab really does have a lovely outdoor courtyard doesn’t it.
As per every Sunday night, Wellington Jazz ensemble The Troubles play at Meow on Edward Street. 8pm kickoff and free entry. See the end of your weekend out in style.
