If you’re looking to check out some live music or DJing in the capital city this week, you’ve got a lot of options. Considering this, I’ve decided to give you a quick rundown on a bunch of different events happening around Wellington over the next seven days. Take your pick, get amongst, and most importantly – have fun!
Wednesday 27th February, Bettys: TNC 2013 Launch Party Ft. Christoph El Truento & Riki Gooch
To celebrate the 2013 relaunch of the longest running weekly modern music club night in Wellington, The Nark Crew have put together a double bill of live electronic sets from Auckland based cosmic beats producer Christoph El’ Truento and Wellington’s very own groovemaster, Riki Gooch. With support from Beat Mobb and B-Lo, we can expect a full evening of blunted instrumental hip-hop, space jazz, cubist psychedelica and raw soul. You can listen to albums from Christoph El Truento and Riki Gooch by CLICKING HERE and HERE respectively. FREE ENTRY.
As part of the MAWSA Orientation 2013, New Zealand’s top turntablist DJ and fearless sound explorer Alphabethead and his friends Ridge Jaggers, Ozone, Young Prety and Drax Project are taking over Mighty Mighty for the night. At $10 entry on the door for the general public, or free with a Massey student ID, Thursday night at Mighty Mighty offers a window into the more slanted side of local hip-hop music. For experimentation, originality and plain good fun, Alphabethead and the boys have you covered. You can get better acquainted with the music of Alphabethead by CLICKING HERE.
Well loved and appreciated at their previous Wellington appearances, Friday night marks the return of respected Munich multimedia arts collective Chicks On Speed. Blurring the lines between art, music, fashion, new media technologies and performance, for fifteen years now, they’ve been a forward leaning presence within an intersecting set of creative realms. On Friday night they step to the stage at Puppies, presenting their own uniquely visual heavy take on electroclash music and culture. Loved on the fine arts circuit as well, what they do sits in a space deeper than the standard laptop dance music dress-up acts of the 2000s. This is a rare opportunity to witness the true source. Pre-sale tickets are available over at Under The Radar for $20+bf by CLICKING HERE. The venue opens at 8pm. You can get more familiar with Chicks On Speed by CLICKING HERE.
Moon Duo is a collaborative venture between Wooden Shijps guitarist Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada. Space rock proponents, their sound mixes electronic protopunk with oil stained highway rock and roll, creating an energy fluid, volatile and engaging. Riding off the back of their second album Circles, this Portland based duo will bring their unique soundworld to Bodega on Saturday night. With doors opening at 8pm, pre-sale tickets are available over at Under The Radar for $38+bf by CLICKING HERE, or more on the door. You can learn more about Moon Duo by CLICKING HERE.
