WLG – In the beginning…
So…a couple of months ago some pretty bright Wellington minds came up with a cheeky idea. Why not launch a full scale attack on the Sydney food and wine scene by opening up a Wellington Pop Up restaurant for two weeks. Some more meetings ensued and here we are some months down the track embarking on the bold move of actually making the darn thing happen!
We are taking top notch chefs Jacob Brown (The Larder), Shaun Clouston (Logan Brown), Tom Hutchison (Capitol) and Rex Morgan (Boulcott Street Bistro) to Sydney to cook up a storm. Coming with us is a monster load of wine from our fantastic vino neighbours Wairarapa and Marlborough, 250kgs of Mojo Coffee, 25kgs of Regal King Salmon, a tonne of Tuatara beer (and we mean a tonne) and a whole host of Wellington, Wairarapa and Marlborough food. More on that later.
The venue is the iconic Bayswater Brasserie – transformed into WLG. That’s the name of the restaurant and for any of you frequent flyers you’ll know it’s also Wellington’s airport code.
We’ve got some great partners helping us out like Air New Zealand, Loop Music, Destination Marlborough, Wellington Restaurant Association and Grow Wellington. We’ve had amazing support from the restaurant industry in Wellington with front of house being drawn from some of our best spots; Chow Tory Street, Ortega Fish Shack and Bar, Boulcott Street Bistro, Arbitrageur, Logan Brown, Monsoon Poon, Osteria del Toro, Scopa, Capitol and The Larder to name but a few.
The restaurant opens on Tuesday 14 September and runs until 26 September. Come along for the ride – we need as much home support as we can muster to take on the Aussies.
