5 places to do your Christmas shopping
First, let me be smug: I finished all my Christmas shopping last week. Organised!
But this is not usually the case. In case you’re suffering from a lack of seasonal inspiration, here’s my list of 5 places in downtown Wellington to help you tick off your list:
1. The Underground Market
Frank Kitts will be bustling on Saturdays and Sundays in the weeks leading up to Christmas. I’ve blogged about their speciality Christmas weekends before and I have to say, I love the way these markets are curated – there’s a good variety of good products.
Check out the tea towels created by local design pixie Rebecca Davidson. 100% organic fair-trade cotton featuring yummy recipes and travel tales. Nommm! There’s lots of great stuff for kids – I got a cute yellow owl cushion/toy for my nephew that I know he will love!
If you’re shopping for a stylish lady, make sure you pop in to this pop-up shop, in Dukes Arcade on the corner of Willis and Manners, for proudly NZ made clothing and accessories from young, up n coming designers like Artery, Miss Philly, White Rabbit, and artwork from Jinx in the sky.
Prices vary from $5 to $500, so you can decide how spendy Santa is feeling.
3. I Love Ugly pop-up shop
Skip the predictable mainstream stores and pick up something a little edgier from I Love Ugly. This New Zealand menswear brand has made its temporary home in the Old Bank Arcade, next door to Lush.
All their dark shades are balanced by some unexpected floral prints and, if you’re looking for the latest silhouette, then this is the place to get your baggy-bottomed track pants.
4. Ora Gallery
Giving someone a piece of art can be risky – will it suit their decor? Their taste? But there’s plenty of classy and distinctly Kiwi artworks to choose from at Ora Gallery on Allen Street. I have a soft spot for unique blown glass pieces like the translucent green koru-shaped ornaments.
And they’re got an after-hours events from 4pm – 7pm on Thursday 13 December with bubbles to add some cheer to your Christmas chores.
Your last minute shopping solution: Just Good Stuff at Thistle Hall on upper Cuba Street. They’re open from 11.00am – 7.00pm on Tuesday 18 to Sunday 23 December.
I’ve always found they have just the right kind of quirky crafty gift – but do get in quick as there’s nothing worse than missing out on the handmade item you’ve been contemplating. You don’t want to be the fool who missed out on adding this navity scene to your Christmas tree set-up!
Here’s a 6th selection to round things off. If you’re chained to your work desk, then jump online and check out Wellington-made jewellery from www.m-et-al.com
They’re running 12 Days of Christmas specials with free shipping – and donating 10% of all sales from this promotion to the New Zealand’s Women’s Refuge. Now that’s the Christmas spirit!
