Swing into Art Deco style

Swing into Art Deco style.

Sevens weekend meant we saw all sorts of “style” on Wellington streets, but this weekend we are ensured of something delightful.

From 10am to 1pm on Saturday 11 February, the Vintage Buy/Sell/Swap promises to be a treasure hunter’s paradise, as the dance studio at 22 Webb St is filled with garments invoking the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s.

For those with plans to head over to Napier for Art Deco Weekend later this month, it’s the perfect opportunity to stock up on glam garments and brush up on retro beauty techniques.

And even if you’re not planning to travel there, who really needs an excuse to go along to this annual vintage sale?

It’s brought to us by the Full Swing dance company, a group with boundless enthusiasm for the styles of days past. Their teachers, dancers and other aficionados are casting open their wardrobes and collections for this event, from fabulous frocks and jaunty hats to dapper menswear and retro bric-a-brac.

“Over the years of dancing with Full Swing, the teachers become very experienced in re-creating vintage looks,” says Sally-ann Moffat,  stylish Full Swinger, “We all build up quite a large vintage wardrobe, and every so often we need to cull them.”

And it’s not just clothing up for grabs. Your questions and queries about recreating a vintage beauty look can be answered, as Claire from The Vanity Case demonstrates hairstyles reflecting bygone eras. She says that the iconic ’30s Marcel waves are easier than they look – head along and pick up some tips.

A gold coin gains you entry to the the Vintage Buy/Sell/Swap and also a complimentary cup of tea and slice of cake!
