WIN: Glamorous jewels at Madame Fancy Pants

WIN: Glamorous jewels at Madame Fancy Pants.

A couple of weekends ago, when I caught up with Claire, the doyenne behind Madame Fancy Pants, she was busy working in the back room of the store, finishing her Summer 13 jewellery collection, In Moonlight. The pieces are all handmade, right here on Cuba Street.

Claire’s passion for creating beautiful things radiates from her as she talks about the jewellery. She is so upbeat and cheerful, you walk away with the impression that this is a person truly doing what they love in life.

The lookbook she’s released with the collection has a wonderful nostalgic and glamorous atmosphere. “I watched all of the Indiana Jones movies with my son,” Claire tells me, “And it stirred something up! It’s been so long since I’ve made my own stuff, and I knew exactly the kind of thing I wanted to make.”

She defines the collection as “semi-costume precious” jewellery. They’re sophisticated statement pieces, sure to draw complimentary comments. All the crystals are Swarovski (swoon) and the bronze-y toned metals are brass, sterling silver or 14 carat gold. It’ s not junk, but looking a million bucks is not going to cost you that much.

Smaller pieces start at $50 to $80, and at the top end ($150 to $180) are 3 limited edition designs, with only 12 made of each and hand-numbering to prove it. You can view the whole collection on the Madame Fancy Pants Facebook page.

While we’re chatting, Claire uses the word “sparkly” about 10 million times. Okay, perhaps that’s an exaggeration, but it certainly was the key phrase that stuck in my mind.

Central to the collection are a pair of earrings which dangle and sparkle (yes, sparkly!), evoking Old Hollywood glamour and begging to be worn with your hair swooped up in retro style.

Claire pops through the saloon-style swing doors at the rear of the shop and comes back with a reel of delicate chain, which she has used to create this masterpiece. It’s a score from the vaults of the Royal New Zealand Ballet, vintage chain that was used decades ago in creating their costumes.

“The metal has naturally aged really beautiful. It really does look as if your grandma wore it.”

It’s been a long time since Madame Fancy Pants has had an in-house collection available. I still prize a pair of huge dangling pear-shaped crystal earrings I bought from Claire years and years ago, and so am very pleased for her (and me!).

COMPETITION (now closed):

You could win a pair of earrings (RRP$89) from this collection by Madame Fancy Pants! Entitled In your eyes I see the sun, they are also pictured in the top image: reflective brass deco shapes with sparkly Swarovski crystals and 14kt gold fill hooks. Mmm gorgeous!

Just make a comment below to enter the draw, telling us which movie inspires your jewellery choices when you want to look fancy pants.

Thanks for all your entries! Congratulations to Judith, you are our lucky winner of the prize from Madame Fancy Pants!

I'd have to say Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny has one of the best movie wardrobes ever. From her dynasty-esque collection of drop earrings to the floral backless jumpsuit (!) to the cute fluoro pink camera she carries around!

Is it weird that any movie involving bling always makes me want to buy jewellry?! Now I hated Sex in the City (both movies) but it did make me want to run out and buy lots of bling (engagement) rings!!

By Miranda, 26 October 2012

Definitely Moulin Rouge, a wonderland of sparkle and glamour!

By Amie Backhouse, 27 October 2012

I am quite inspired by anything piratey. Think one big hoop earring, lots of chains and bracelets and a hand off of rings like a fortune teller. Go no further than Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean. Love it.
